Young Marble Giants

Like a lot of people, I got introduced to the Welsh trio Young Marble Giants long after I was a fan of the ten-million and growing bands they inadvertently influenced. Starting around the time of the U.K. post-punk boom in the late 70’s and only lasting a couple of years, their one and only LP, 1980’s Colossal Youth was a mix of everything to come for the next two decades. Stripped down, minimal, deconstructionist pop songs with solid, funky bass-lines, sparse blasts of guitar, and whirling, buried organ… with the occasional drum machine beat, if any percussion at all. Vocalist Allison Statton set the bar for decades of moody, feather-weight indie-pop singers with her breathy, high-pitched voice that lands somewhere between unsure and uninterested.

this band was (and is still) heavyly hyped . I supposed they would have anything I liked, when I bought the record in time (minimalism, clear sound, unusual arrangements, brahbrahbrah…but I was disappointed from the very first monent on.

And I fear, this will never change.

If I want the sound for the next two decades, I can listen to a dropping water tap hearing the neighbours daughter singing in her bathroom.
    It sounds similar.
