Devin

Yep.. ‘I can’t make it home’ is probably the title of my life story. Leave it to Devin to lay it all out for me on his newest album. I don’t have a car anymore but if I did you know I would be playing this as I drove home from the bar every night.

Deerhunter

Yikes. The new Deerhunter record is really good. I wasn’t going to post it since it was leaked a really long time ago, but I picked up the vinyl version of the new single and now I’m excited again. By the way, have you ever read their blog? They post mixes all the time and it’s fun to look at.

TV On The Radio

The new TV On The Radio record Dear Science didn’t make a huge impression on me, but here are a couple of gems that were hiding in the thickets. I have been trying to figure out what made the first album so good but I can’t quite put my finger on it. I think perhaps they are best when they are depressed..

tuff

It’s on the fourth Thursday since there were so many this month, but never the less.. Tonight is fun record times at the Attic. Whenever I write these I always say “come and say hi” but fuck that. Come get a drink, I sort of want to get wasted instead. Let’s do that.

Sebastien Grainger

Sebastien Grainger

The former drummer from Death From Above 1979 released this EP in preparation for his full length Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains, which should have come out yesterday on Saddle Creek. Really catchy and upbeat, which is always good for the brewing cold weather depression. I think I need a couple more EPs like this to make it through the next five months. Man I love hand claps.

Tribe Called Quest + Bjork

Bjork

Bjork and A Tribe Called Quest go together like chocolate and peanut butter. She produced these remixes of ‘Stressed Out’ back in the nineties and those horns just kill it every time. The whole thing just seems so genuine.

Philip Glass

Cabrini Green

After I mentioned that Philip Glass score of Candyman in the Daniel Tierney post, I got super excited to get some of those compositions up here as well. Candyman is in-itself a pretty scary film, dealing with complex social undercurrents and having been filmed in Chicago’s now-semi-torn-down Cabrini Green housing projects. However, it’s undeniable that Philip’s Glass’s haunting cathedral of a soundtrack makes the film achieve the status it currently holds. I can make the images go away after watching it, but the never the music. The music has been with me since the day I first saw it when I was sixteen years old.

There is a lot of the music from the film that never seemed to make it on the cd compilation that was released. Check out the video clips to catch the rest.

Daniel Tierney

To follow up that Screens post I made a couple of weeks ago, I thought I’d throw up some recent rough compositions by Daniel Roland Tierney (who was part of both Screens and The Mall respectively). Contemporary classical piano compositions are some of my favorite and it’s great to see people branching out to this sort of territory. Daniel did a great job writing them as well. Really creepy and intense, much the way the Philip Glass interpeted the Candyman soundtrack (which is amazing and scary as hell if you haven’t heard it already) back in the 1990’s.

King Tuff

I’m really psyched because I just found out that this King Tuff record will be released on vinyl in the next couple of months. That means that I’ll be able to play these sweet jams really loud over some bar speakers real soon. Did I just say “sweet jams”? Hell yes I did, have you listened to it yet? Granted, it makes me feel sort of weird that they come from Vermont since it’s so full of sunshine and stuff. Shouldn’t it come from a California coast somewhere. Whatever, the last time I went to Brattleboro was when I was like sixteen so what do I know. Umm.. what else. Oh yeah, this band is actually Kyle Thomas, who is also the frontman in J. Mascis’s stoner-metal side-project Witch. Did you know that already? The internet just told me like 30 seconds ago.

Paul McCartney & Wings

Wings

Oh what, it’s Monday again? No big deal since I got this Wings’ song to help me out. I owe my friend Jane’s blog big time for this one. Also on a geekier note, I always forget what a great bass player Paul McCartney is. Super underrated as far as all that stuff goes.
