Two Thousand and Three

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Yeah Right! Can anyone tell me what these three songs have in common? I guess I should have posted this six years ago, but better late than never right? Plus that Frank Black song is so underrated and amazing that it deserves some further attention. Wavves

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
waaa Here's another post-SXSW post, I'm trying to document the handful of bands that got a lot of attention before the fest. Per usual with SXSW, I missed most of the bands I wanted to see (I missed most bands period) due to trying to shuffle our stupid gear from one show to the next in a mob, while navigating Austin's terrible freeway system, usually while drunk. Wavves were one of the bands I wanted to see, but since most trusted reports point to them being one of the worst live bands of the weekend, I'm not going to dwell on it. The records are pretty heavy with filler, but there are some interesting, blown-out pop gems burried under all this tape hiss that are growing on me. HTRK

HTRK A couple of days ago I had a meeting with model and porn star Sasha Grey to discuss many important topics. Due to some scheduling and time constraints, we had decided that it would be best to have our meeting on the internet. I have to say that it was maybe the fastest meeting I've ever had. Not five minutes after meeting up with her on Spankwire Dot Com, I said my goodbyes and went to go finish making dinner. After dinner I started to feel guilty about not knowing her very well and went about reading her interviews and learning about what she was like as a person (I know, I'm way fucked up and I'm not even Catholic). I didn't actually learn that much since she's only like 21, but I did find this band HTRK posted up on her MySpace page. I'm not sure if it was because I was all caught up in her weird porn, model, famous person world or what, but I started to sort of like the band. They're from Melbourne by way of Berlin, play great misery-rock that reminds me of early PJ Harvey and play all their shows really, really loud. Plus, in keeping with that whole porn thing, all the songs emanate sweat, sex and dark corners. Can't you hear this band in your rape fantasy? HTRK - HA! Tyvek

tyvek.jpg //photo by canderson Michigan's favorite party punks Tyvek were part of the latest Sub Pop singles series. Their live show is always fun, but their recorded output has been a little hit or miss. This single is a big, solid step up, here's the smoking a-side. Caught them as a three-piece at Emo's for one of their SXSW sets, not the best set up for a party band but they were still pretty fun. Nina Simone

nina-simone1.jpg I've been on a bit of a Nina Simone kick lately thanks to a couple of recent LP scores. Her story is incredible and there's too much to tell in this little space, that's what Wikipedia is for anyways, but she was as amazing an artist as she was an amazing woman. A-Frames

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
a-frames.jpg Seattle punks Bend Sinister happened upon a little known Sacramento California band called Karate Party and had their minds blown. They shuffled their aesthetic, borrowed from Karate Party's bag of tricks, and reformed as the thunderous art-punk outfit the A-Frames. Mixing harsh, art-damaged punk with rigid krautrock and a heap of bubblegum catchiness, the A-Frames put out 2 amazing LPs (A-Frames 1, A-Frames 2) and a grip of killer singles (Police 1000/Traction 7" an all time fave) before dropping and "eh" of an album on Sub Pop. Nevermind that, the first two records are must-haves and if you can E-Bay any of their singles you won't regret it. Members moonlight in The Intelligence, AFCGT, Children's Hospital, Rodent Plague and others. Irma Thomas

Friday, March 20th, 2009
irmafro.jpg One of my favorite female voices, Irma Thomas is the Soul Queen of New Orleans. Her songs have been covered and reworked a million times, but I love the earthiness and grittiness of her own recordings she did with superstar southern soul producer Allen Toussaint. Not sure if this still holds up post-Katrina, but last I heard she still runs her own small club in New Orleans and performs often. Tonite

Tuff Town Jay went off to SXSW so tonight at the Attic Andrew Scott will be playing all the best records that we don't have. I'll be there as well but all I have this week is a lot of sixties stuff. Maybe we can have a rad sixties/punk party and make it sweaty like in the summertime. Tuff Town at The Attic 24/Mission St 10pm - 2am

Here We Go Magic

Here We Go Magic //photo by jonny leather So every time we play records at the Attic, Jay burns a cd beforehand of all the new songs he found that week which haven't been released on vinyl yet. Afterwards he always drops it in my box of records at the end of the night for me to discover the next morning. Then I get to spend the next week obsessing over a bunch of songs that I have no leads on whatsoever. I usually end up typing the lyrics into google and discovering them through lyric sites. Anyways, luckily I didn't have to do that for Brooklyn's Here We Go Magic since he had been talking about them all week long. I kind of slept on Luke Temple the first time around but I have to say that this record blew me away.. so good. They're playing with Grizzly Bear at The Fillmore in June so I might bite the bullet and check them out, but I sort of wish I was in Austin right now to see the sweaty packed shows they will be performing at sxsw. Also, check out the video for 'Tunnelvision'. They did a real nice job. Cold Cave

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009
cold_cave.jpg Philly synth-wave revivalists Cold Cave threw down a few cool singles this last year, I've cherry-picked a few favorites from them. There's a strong early 80s new-wave/industrial vibe here (minus the bad taste in clothes), like a brighter, happier version of The Normal, or Digital Leather covering pop songs.
