I had been waiting to post this song off the new Interpol album until I had listened to the whole thing and I finally did today. //photo by anna ferraro Finally, a new album this week that I can get behind. Really into this new Walkmen album - I'm really happy see them develop and age so well as a band. I remember seeing them open for Blonde Redhead back in Boston maybe around 1999 and thinking they were terrible and not together as a band at all (I think they may have told a story about their van spinning out in the snow or something). Then later when The Strokes were around, I remember thinking that they sounded just like them (not remembering that they may had been around first). It's only in the last couple of years that I started paying attention again and I'm real glad I did. Sometimes it pays to keep checking back and not write bands off. What's up with The Strokes? Does it matter? Ask that same question of The Walkmen and they will just wave back like "Hi.. we have been here the whole time writing awesome songs, nice to meet you." New Les Savy Fav album is a little 'meh' for my taste, which is surprising after the last amazing record. Not enough of the picky Johnny Marr-esque melodies from before and really when that's gone, all you're left with is Tim Harrington screaming at you from the stage while you wince in pain. Still, a couple of standout tracks punctuate what could have been.. well, just that I guess. "What could have been". (Wow, this was a really scathing review - sorry guys, good work though!) Oh man, really behind on getting some of these new records up but I promise that this week will not fail to disappoint. Three new albums from three great bands which hopefully should appear up here shortly. The new Arcade Fire album The Suburbs got me really excited, and after the first listen-through I was totally blown away. After the second listen I was a little less so, and now after a billion, I think it's just okay. Granted the theme/concept idea is great and there are some superb examples of songwriting on this album (see 'Suburban War'), but overall it didn't give me that previous show stopping feeling at the start of every track. They are still an amazing band, I'm just sayin.. On a side note, there is one song that talks about San Francisco being over and it bummed me out because I have been looking for a new apartment forever and I could totally relate (on a certain level). Seriously though, I need to find a fucking apartment soon, and not one that's a $2300 one bedroom. I'll take their advice for real and leave. No Joke. The heat has me thinking of the perfect opiated pop from this great-white-hope of the late-90s. What happened to these guys? When this four-song 7" (their only release) came out nobody would shut up about it, as if it was ushering a new era of pop scene like no other before it. Then they dropped off the map (like entirely dropped off the music map with no "members of Hopkirk & Lee" outfits to be seen) and Belle & Sebastian took the title of America's indie-pop darlings, hitting the big time later the same year with The Boy With The Arab Strap. But for the half a year prior I heard the name "Hopkirk & Lee" dropped as an influence more times than I could count, I wonder how much of this single can be heard in some of the soft, stoney indie pop of the decade that followed.
